Updates from the Cross Training World

So, it's been one week since my diagnosis and I am doing pretty well with the cross training. I've been cycling on the trainer for at least an hour every day, sometimes more, or sometimes twice a day. I've also been doing "speed" workouts from Pfitz's pool training plan. By now you know that my life is not complete without something crazy, funny, or just plain weird happening, so here goes.

I did my first pool workout on Sunday. I couldn't find my usual triathlon bathing suit, so I settled on an old speedo type. It felt a little loose, but nothing too bad, so I just went. I was the only one at the pool, besides the high school boy lifeguard. I go to get a floatie belt, but they were all so long and big that even pulled as tight as they would go, they were too loose. The lifeguard saw me trying on belts and he redirected me to the kids' belts! Ha! Luckily, I could loosen the kids' belts really far and make them work. So, into the water I went and wow, immediate wedgie. I think the swimsuit bottom was just so loose that it wouldn't stay in place. It just kept crawling! Plus, that stupid little floatie belt was probably pulling it up, too! The pool was unusually quiet and I could hear myself breathing hard during the intervals and my little splashes, too. The lifequard began whistling. I don't know if he just felt awkward or what, but it kind of got on my nerves. At this point, I had given up on the wedgie and just continued on with my workout with my swimsuit up my butt! So that was Day 1.

The next workout was during the week and the pool was kind of crowded with kids, etc. That morning I couldn't find my triathlon swimsuit and did NOT want to wear the Wedgie Suit. A bikini was not going to be an option, so...I chose my old swimdress. Yep, years ago (in high school) I was a camp counselor and had to have a very conservative swimsuit. Well, I saved it. And then I wore it to the YMCA. Imagine what your grandmother would wear to the beach. So, I did my little workout and got ready to leave. Wow, I forgot my shorts to put OVER my suit. So... I just wrapped a towel around my waist and ran to my car. And that's what you do when you are clearly awesome. Hahahaha, yeah right!

Last night was a workout with no incident- phew! I did finally find my triathlon suit, so that's good.

In other news, I finished our racing schedule for track AND we start practice Monday. I'm really excited to see what this year holds. We also had a brand new mountain bike donated to us. We are selling raffle tickets for it. I had said I was "done" with my track efforts, but quitting has never really been my style. So, onward we press!

Assuming my ankle is better in the time frame the doctor provided, I am hoping to be well enough to do a 50K in late May. I know this doesn't fit w/ my original plan, but it really works for TP and my travel schedule/work schedule/racing plans. There won't be a spring marathon this year, but there WILL be an adventure race. We have 2 adventures in mind. The one we REALLY want to do requires 3 to a team, so we are trying to get another person committed. If that doesn't work out, we will do a 2 person one. I learned my lesson from the Bear Beach Challenge, and will DEFINITELY be practicing kayaking more. Luckily, TP has 2, so that should be easy.

Happy Training, everyone!

  1. I am so touched by your story about the kids' track team!
Do you mind if I link the fundraiser on my blog? Can you give me some direction on how to do so?
Also, I am a school board president in my "spare time" (lol) and we just re-did a track and found an awesome company who did the work for an amazing price because they are low on work right now. If you want me to pass along the company information, let me know. They were a pleasure to work with and did a great job.

  5. You're not a 'real' aqua runner (NOT jogger!:)) unless you have a weird pool story or two! LOL One time a guy asked me how tall I was, another my drawstring got caught in the trap thing!

Keep it up, this may be what rachettes you to sub -3.

Best wishes to the track team this season!

  6. LOL on the swim dress! At least you finally got some use out of it after saving it for all these years. Sorry about your ankle and I hope you are up and running again soon.
