"Give Yourself a Break"

Those were the words written by my running coach after this weekend's less-than-stellar half marathon. You know those runners that always want and expect a PR? Well, I'm one of them. I know I'm in a rut, which is the main reason I hired Coach. I guess until yesterday, I didn't really realize how badly my head is out of the game. This week in Brewton, we had the coldest temps since 1999. Even at that, it still wasn't THAT cold. We're talking 20-30s for the lows, nothing major.

The Pensacola Beach Runs start down in Gulf Breeze in the resort area. The neat thing about the race is that you can choose to run the 5K, 10K, or 1/2 marathon DURING the race. The course is beautiful b/c it runs out to the desolate area of P'cola Beach, the protected part. I felt okay race morning, a little tired, and still coughing just a tad, but still okay. Here are the splits:

The first three miles are in the neighborhood area: 6:36, 6:40, 6:39 Next comes the brutal protected area. You know what? Those condos are really good at blocking beach breeze and when they aren't there, the wind blows ridiculously hard. The course ran out to the 7 mile marker, then turned around. Here are the going-out miles: 6:55, 7:08, 7:15, 7:01 Then the turn-around and relief from the wind 6:42, 6:53, 6:41, 7:02 At this point, I was leading by a few minutes, knew I wasn't going to PR and was just beat. My head and heart were not in this race. I purposefully slowed down, not even caring about finish time. The neighborhoods before the finish were 6:54, 6:50, & 54 sec. Final time: 1:30:16 I had more left when I finished and my right hammy was feeling very, very tight. I emailed Coach the results from the race and he told me to give myself a break. One race is one race. My job now is to get my head back into my training and look forward to the next one.

Shout out to K, who ran the 5K yesterday. He even beat his goal time by almost a minute! Way to go!

The best part of the race was afterwards. I got to cool down and girl talk with friend, Anna. It is always such a treat for me to talk to fellow runners. Anna won the 10K in a blazing time. She is super-fast. We all hung out afterwards, too! Below is a pic from the awards. Anna won the 10K; Katie won her AG in the 10K, and I won the Half.

  2. I love that you won but you're still disappointed. That's a driven athlete if I've ever seen one.

  3. Sorry to hear you are disappointed in your performance. But hey you did win at least! Maybe a little break from the races is a good thing, follow your coach--times like these you need someone to be an observer so you don't end up burned out. I saw one of your posts about one of your new training routines, the 3X 5 mile at HMP one to be exact-- I think you are going to improve more then you can realize and that this is just a minor bump in the road.

I have ever since your RR from the marathon you ran a 3:19 sick realized that you have some talent and drive that is way above many. Don't let this "rut" get you down; you still have many great PRs ahead.

    Hey,

The fact you won the half! Dang girl, I would be more than pleased if I could just keep moving up in my age-group... :)

I know, it's not what you wanted but great effort under those conditions!
